Before creating the showreel it is important to look at other makeup artist’s showreels to get inspiration from them. The showreel example below is by popular makeup artist Val Garland (figure 1). The majority of the video is interview based, however, at the beginning of the video and a few moments later on there are clips of Garland applying makeup (figure 2), and before and after shoots. What stands out the most about the showreel is that the viewer gets a behind the scenes look at her personality as a makeup artist and how she expresses herself. This is something to think about for a personal showreel as it allows potential clients to know who you are and what your style of work is. In the example video below, filming is recorded professionally in a studio with the correct lighting and camera quality. My own showreel needs to showcase my own work professionally and focus around a central theme, and it will show the progression of behind the scenes work before revealing a finished look mixed with shots of me talking. According to ScreenSkills [n.d], to create a showreel you must “keep it short, focus on the opening, think about the audience, check how it looks on the site and to ask a friend of a friend.” A showreel needs to show all of your best work, be kept up to date, and new showreels can be created as a makeup artist’s career progress.
