The trial and error for image four was split into sections to cover the face, arm and costume components that made up the full body design (figure 1). Following the first trial (figure 2) a lot of improvement was needed as the colour applied to the face was too green and looked fake, however as the first trial run it was successful in visually outlining the design. The colour of the face needed to be able to camouflage against the background of a forest or woodland setting, whereas the green paint applied was too harsh and neon to look natural enough. This was improved upon in the second trial (figure 3) and became the design for the final image. The aim of these trials was to get the colours correct and to blend smoothly to achieve the best visual outcome.

The next stage of the trials was to practice the design for the hands to look like bark and twigs. The first trial involved using fuller’s earth on the hands and painting them brown to look like bark (figure 4), which looked effective at first, however, fuller’s earth dries off and can fall off after a while. The second trial for the bark effect used liquid latex and tissue (figure 5), which lasted longer than fuller’s earth but also took longer to colour. In the industry trial and errors are important to discover which methods work better than others, as there are more factors to think about on a shoot such as what materials and pigments will last all day, what is easily applied during touch ups, and what is most comfortable and breathable for the model.
